Kids and Baptism

At Grace Community Church, as hopefully most churches do, we like to make a big deal about Baptisms. In Cross Street, Grace’s Elementary Age Ministry, after a kid has become a Jesus Follower we ask parents and group leaders to be patient and wait for their kids to express an interest in being baptized. In other words, we do not “force” a kid to be baptized the second they express their desire to follow Christ. As parents and leaders, we guide kids to that place, but in the end it needs to be the their decision. That’s why when a child naturally feels led to follow through with baptism . . . well, IT’S A BIG DEAL! Cross Street leaders continue to partner with parents by asking kids, along with their parents, to attend our Kick Start Classes.

In Kick Start we talk about Salvation, Sin, Heaven, and many other topics, such as BAPTISM. That way when it’s time for a kid to be baptized they have a deeper understanding of what is going on and why they are being submerged in water AND partake in a celebration afterwards. More importantly, they can go through their Baptism Experience with greater confidence and understanding about their Salvation!

Why is baptism a big deal? Why is it cause for celebration? Well, let’s think about what baptism is all about. Baptism is the immersion of a believer into water. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior. It is a picture of the believer’s death to sin, the burial of his life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. (John 1:29-34; Matthew 28:19; Acts 10:47-48; Romans 6:3-4).

In other words, baptism symbolizes the acceptance of forgiveness and the newness of life we have in Christ and their identification with Christ through His death and resurrection. Since this is such a COOL moment, at Grace we cap off this HUGE event by having a party involving gifts and cupcakes. At Grace, we want our kids to not only remember their baptism, but we also want them to walk away with the memory that being baptized and having a relationship with God is cause for CELEBRATION!
So parents, if your child has accepted Christ and is now expressing a desire to be baptized, please contact me, Adam Bayne, and we will get your child signed up and get the ball rolling. WOO-HOO!!!!
