Helping Kids Remember the Month’s Virtue and Memory Verse

Other than a couple of months out of the year when we write our own curriculum, our kids ministry uses 252 Basics as our main source for curriculum . . . AND WE LOVE IT! If you are a 252 user, then you know that each month we focus on a different Virtue and Memory Verse. They are wonderful . . . but getting the kids to memorize them is a bit challenging.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not a big “memorization dude”, but I was noticing that even at the end of the month when we would ask kids about the virtue or memory verse that they were struggling a bit. As I mentioned before,  in Cross Street, our K thru 5th ministry, we like to write our own curriculum every once in a while, which is the perfect time to experiment. January is one of the month’s we write our own stuff, SO this month we decided to introduce a group called “The Munchies” to our kids. They have a music video that helps kids learn the virtue and memory verse for the month. IT HAS BEEN A HUGE SUCCESS!!! Here’s what we did:

1. First we created some memorable characters that we’ll be excited about using for at least the next 6 months. We came up with a total of five characters in the group so that we can switch up vocals and what not from month to month.

2. We used a Flip for our camera, Garage Band to record the song, and iMovie to edit our video. In all, we probably invested three hours into this project.

3. We made a video of the dance moves that go with the music video and sent out a link to our CROSS STREET parents. On the first Sunday of January we showed the new music video to our kids in Large Group and challenged them to “BUG” mom and dad until they get online and learn the dance moves together. The following Sunday we all did the dance in Large Group together.

4. After the first Worship Song, we bust out the video and have fun!!!

5. Try and use your characters in other videos that you make to build popularity.

Each month you can have a new song!!! It’s super easy and super fun!!! AND MOST OF ALL . . . .EFFECTIVE!!!
